Mercedes-Benz Concept IAA grows 39cm to be more aero

The Mercedes-Benz Concept IAA is a slippery beast with a Cd 0.19. To achieve this number, the car automatically grows 390mm (15.4-in) above 80km/h (50mph) to become more aerodynamic.

There are eight segments at the rear of the Concept IAA (Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile) that extend out at above 80km/h (50mph) or at the touch of a button. There also flaps that extend the front bumper forwards by 25mm (1-in) and rearwards 20mm (0.8-in).

Active rims changed their cupping from 55mm (2.2-in) to nothing, while a louvre in the front moves 60mm (2.4-in) to the rear to improve airflow under the car.

The car also car-to-car and car-to-infrastructure communications, optical finger navigation buttons, and plug-in gas-electric hybrid drivetrain with a total of 205kW (279hp).

Top speed is 250km/h (155mph), electric driving range is 66km (41mi), fuel economy is 1.25L/100km (188mpg).
