2020 Volkswagen Passat for USA previewed by new LWB sedan in China

The 2020 Volkswagen Passat for North America has probably been previewed by the new model that’s debuted in China, and is a big step up from today’s car.

The car for the Chinese market is bigger in every way than today’s car — 63mm (2.5″) longer, 2mm (0.1″) wider and a 68mm (2.7″) wheelbase — except height which is down 3mm (0.1″). It’s also larger than the Passat sold in Europe and elsewhere.

The Chinese Passat has really long rear doors meaning it’s probably a special LWB model for China, so the US version should be a little shorter and better proportioned.

Even if it’s not, the new Passat has a more sporty and upmarket look than today’s dowdy appliance. It will also be more modern with the latest MQB platform, and latest technology, including LED lights, 10.25″ touchscreen infotainment system, mood lighting, and digital instruments.

In China, the new Passat is available only with a 2L turbo I4 gas engine making either 183hp (136kW) or 217hp (162kW), both with a 7-speed DCT.

We assume the US version will also be available with the 3.6L V6, like the 280hp (209kW) version in the Atlas.
