2020 Mercedes-Benz SL (R233) to be based on Mercedes-AMG GT

The next Mercedes-Benz SL roadster, due in 2019, will will be developed by the company’s AMG performance division, and based on the AMG GT.

Sources have told Autocar, development of the SL is being handed over to AMG so that the range topping roadster will be sportier and more dynamic, and hopefully arrest its slowing sales.

Sharing a platform will also help Mercedes-Benz cut costs, and make the AMG GT coupe (C170) and convertible (R170) a more profitable venture too.

Codenamed R233, the new SL will replace that current car, which was launched in 2013. The R233 SL will have an aluminum body, a carbonfiber torque tube, and lower weight with a fabric top instead of a folding hardtop.

The R233 SL could also gain a coupe model, which will be the first since the 1981 SL.
