2020 Audi Q3 Sportback: Coupe SUV takes unusual name

The 2020 Audi Q3 coupe has named the Q3 Sportback instead of being named Q4 because the company is already planning a different model for that badge.

Due to go on sale in 2020, the Audi Q4 E-Tron will be a fully electric crossover based on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB architecture.

So, Audi has decided to use the Sportback name for the Q3 coupe. Sportback has so far only been used on 5-door hatchbacks and liftbacks to distinguish these models from others in the range.

The Q3 Sportback is largely new from the B pillar back, but the powertrains and technology will be shared with the regular Q3.

The Q3 Sportback goes on sale in Europe during the fall of 2019. In Germany, the Q3 Sportback 35 TDI S-tronic starts at €40,200 (US$44,700), and the Q3 Sportback 45 TFSI Quattro S-tronic begins at €46,200 (US$51,300).
