2017 BMW M550d xDrive: Sleeper car has first ever quad turbo diesel

The styling is dull, predictable and evolutionary, but this BMW 5-Series is plenty crazy with the world’s first ever quad turbo diesel passenger car engine.

The G30 and G31 BMW M550d xDrive has a 3-liter inline 6-cylinder diesel engine with four multistage turbochargers. The most powerful passenger car diesel engine ever, it makes 294kW (394hp) at 4,400rpm and 760Nm (561 lb-ft) from 2,000rpm.

The new M550d xDrive sedan and wagon (Touring) has a standard rear biased all-wheel drive system, 8-speed automatic, sport suspension, and active steering. There’s also an M spoiler, exhaust and brake package installed.

It 19-inch wheels with 245/40 tires at the front and 275/35 R19 tires at the rear. Also standard on the M550d are grey mirror housings, grille frame, bumper highlights, and air breathers.
