Toyota Tacoma etymology: What does its name mean?

The Toyota Tacoma is related to the evergreen Hilux and is one of America’s most popular mid-size trucks, but what’s the story behind its name?

The Toyota Tacoma is named after Mount Rainier in Washington state and is about 100 miles (160km) away from Seattle. Mount Rainier was known by the local Salish Indians as Tahoma or Tacoma.

It’s believed that the name translates to mouth of waters. Another possible theory is that it could mean larger than Mount Baker, which known by the Salish as Koma.

According to Toyota the “name suggests images of strength and power”.
