Toyota Solara etymology: What does its name mean?

The Toyota Solara was a coupe and convertible range based on the Camry sedan, but significantly less popular. What does its name mean? Find out here.

Officially known as the Toyota Camry Solara, the coupe and convertible were always badged as just the Toyota Solara.

According to Toyota, Solara name portrays “the radiance of the sun”, fitting given that in both generations the two-door Camry derivative was available as a convertible.

The Solara replaced the earlier XV10 Camry coupe, which turned the boring but exceedingly well made sedan into a awkwardly proportioned, but still dull, two-door. The first Solara coupe and convertible were pretty neat to look at, especially for the late 1990s Toyota.

The less said about the droopy styling about the second generation Solara twins the better. Well, at least, they were marginally more interesting than the XV30 Camry sedan.
