Toyota FJ Cruiser to end production August 2016

The retro Toyota FJ Cruiser will cease production in August 2016, ending a production run that’s lasted 10 years, which began in 1996 for the LHD model.

Initially created for the lucrative US market, the Toyota FJ Cruiser was based on the contemporary 4Runner but had a retro body with suicide doors that mimicked the original Toyota Land Cruiser, also known as the FJ40.

As with most retro and sports cars, sales tapered off, and production of left hand drive models ended in 2014. Production for right hand drive markets, which only started in 2010 has continued until now.

Now sale have dropped to the point where it’s not reasonable for Toyota to continue making the car.
