Toyota Camry etymology: What does its name mean?

The Toyota Camry is one of the world’s most popular cars, but where does its name come from and what does it mean?

Toyota really has a thing for crowns, and given that the Camry has notched up a decade-and-a-half on top of the American sales charts, few cars have been so appropriately named.

The Camry name derives from the Japanese word 冠, which can be transliterated as kanmuri or kamuri. Depending on the context it can mean cap, crown, diadem or coronet.
