Tesla increases range of some cars within Hurricane Irma’s impact zone

Tesla has temporarily increased the range of Model S and Model X 60kWh cars within the path of Hurricane Irma to allow their owners to escape the storm.

For a while the company sold cheaper Model S 60 and Model X 60 variants with a 75kWh battery that was software locked to only provide 60kWh of range.

Owners of these cars can choose to upgrade their cars to use the full 75kWh for between US$4,500 and US$9,000.

One customer asked Tesla if they could have a temporary upgrade to help them escape Hurricane Irma, currently bearing down on Florida and the Carolinas. Tesla granted their wish over the air, and decided to roll out the temporary upgrade to all similar customers within the hurricane’s strike zone.
