The Renault Austral replaces the Kadjar as the company’s midsize SUV from late 2022, and it has a name that evokes the Australian outback.
According to Renault the “Austral conjures up the vibrancy and heat of the southern hemisphere and extends an invitation to explore, which makes it an ideal fit for an SUV”.
There was nothing awful about the Kadjar, and it sold well, so why are they replacing a name plate that’s only one generation old with a new one?
Probably because the Kadjar didn’t sound great, and was a bit tricky to pronounce. Renault says Austral has a “harmonious balance of sounds that are easy to pronounce by people all around the world”.
