Fiat 124 Spider: ND Mazda MX-5 base, new style, 1.4L turbo

The 2016 Fiat 124 Spider is based on the fourth generation Mazda MX-5, but has been fitted with new front and rear end styling, and Fiat’s 1.4-liter turbocharged Multijet engine.

Using the same structure and platform as the ND Mazda MX-5, the Fiat 124 Spider has styling inspired by the 124 Spider that was sold from the 1960s. Almost every external element has been changed, as there’s new headlights, bumpers, grille, hood, fenders, and taillights.

The windscreen, and Mazda’s easy to hand operated fabric roof remain unchanged.

Under the hood, the 1.5 and 2-liter SkyActiv direct injection Mazda engines have been ditched in favor of a 1.4-liter Multijet turbocharged 4-cylinder Fiat unit with 160hp (119kW) and 184 lb-ft (249Nm).

Power goes to the rear wheels via 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic.

In the US, the first 124 units of the 124 Spider will be a limited edition Prima Edizione Lusso model with Azzurro Italia (blue) paint, saddle leather, special badging, wearables, and a poster.

For the EU, the first 124 units will be sold as the Anniversary limited edition with Rosso Passione (red) paint and black leather seats.

The Fiat 124 Spider goes on sale in the US and EU from the summer 2016.
