Cosmo-inspired Mazda coupe coming to 2015 Tokyo show

Mazda has teased a new 2-seat, front engine, rear-wheel drive coupe that will make its debut at November’s 2015 Tokyo Motor Show.

The new coupe concept looks to be based on the ND Mazda MX-5’s front-engine, RWD SkyActiv architecture. The company says that the new concept is inspired by the classic Cosmo coupe that was produced between 1967 and 1972.

Just over 1200 over the rotary engined original Cosmo coupes were built, all with either a 110hp (82kW) or 128hp (95kW) 0.9-liter rotary engine.

Although inspired by the Cosmo (below), Mazda has yet to say whether the concept will have an inline engine or rotary engine.
