BMW tops Mercedes-Benz, Lexus: Is #1 luxury brand in US for 2019

BMW has sold more cars and trucks than Mercedes-Benz and Lexus to become the number 1 luxury car brand in the US for the first time since 2015.

Helped by the introduction of the fullsize X7 SUV, BMW sold 324,800 cars according to preliminary figures. Mercedes-Benz sold roughly 316,100, and third place Lexus sold 298,100.

Mercedes-Benz was also hindered by bottlenecks at its Tuscaloosa, Alabama, factory where it produces many of its SUVs, including the popular GLE and GLS.

The story might not be over yet, BMW is currently under investigation by SEC for inflating sales. The SEC is investigating claims BMW has pressured dealers to register “loaner cars” lent to owners when their vehicles are in for servicing.
