2022 Audi R8 to become a 1,000hp all electric supercar

The third generation Audi R8 will drop its V10 gas engine in favor of multiple electric motors generating up to 1,000hp (746kW).

With the tepid reception and sales of the current second generation R8, Audi was set to wield the axe on its Lamborghini Huracan based supercar, but the company’s shift to electrification after Dieselgate and its mission to be an electric car leader will see the R8 given a third wind.

According to Autocar, the new R8 will go on sale in 2022, and will only be available with an e-tron electric powertrain. With at least two electric motors, the new R8 will again have all wheel drive as standard.

The new R8 could have a 0-100km/h time of around 2 seconds, and a top speed of over 300km/h (186mph).

The car may inherit a lot of its design from the PB18 e-tron concept.
