2020 Tesla Model Y vs Model 3: Differences compared side by side

The Tesla Model Y is the automaker’s second crossver, and is closely related to the Model 3 sedan. See the similarities in this side by side comparison.

Just like how the Model S and Model X share the same platform, and same design theme, the Model 3 and Model Y are very closely related both mechanically, structurally and from a design standpoint.

If the Model Y's headlights, bumpers and bonnet aren't exactly the same, they've been designed to look practically identical. And no, the Model Y doesn't have a black fake grille like the original Model S. The black section in the bumper is just a reflection of the road in the concave section of the front fascia.

In order to achieve good interior room, the Model 3 sedan looks a little bit stumpy. The Model Y takes that even further, because it looks like a Model 3 with raised roof, taller windows and an unchanged belt line.

Although it looks like the Model Y doesn't have many unique body panels, its exterior does seem to feature all new sheet metal. While the surfacing an design are almost identical, note how the Model Y's doors have different cut lines around the rear wheel arch and the sills.

The rear of the Model Y, like the front, looks almost identical to the Model 3, but there are a few key, but subtle differences.

Both trunk lids have large protruding spoilers, but notice how the Model Y's is much taller, especially the area below the licence plate holder. The Model Y also features a blacked out diffuser style element, at least on this AWD Performance variant.

The dashboard of the Model 3 seems to be carried straight over for the Model Y. As such, the Model Y's primary interfaces are its large 15

While the Model 3 only has seats for five people, the Model Y can seat seven, although head room in the third row may be compromised.

As promised the Model Y will be about 10% more expensive than the Model 3. The Standard Range model starts at US$39,000, while the equivalent Model 3 begins at US$35,000.

The Model Y will also be available in Long Range (RWD), Long Range Dual Motor AWD, and Long Range Performance variants.

The Standard Range has an EPA range of 230mi (370km), while the regular Long Range can do 300mi (483km) between charges. The Performance model will have a 0-60mph time of 3.5s.
