2020 Subaru Legacy vs 2015-2019: Differences compared side by side

The 2020 Subaru Legacy doesn’t look that new, but beneath the familiar body is a new stiffer, lighter platform. See how everything has changed, subtley.

Stylistically the sixth-generation Legacy isn't too different to the old model. It's a little smoother, a little more polished, and definitely a bit better looking, but we're definitely not talking a Bangle-style revolution here.

The most noticeable change, at least to my eye, is in the side profile. Here you can see the softer body treatment, and more organic surfacing, which is similar to what's used on the Impreza. Again it's a subtle difference, but it does make the Legacy look sportier without needing to be aggressive.

Subtle changes again at the back. Again, everything smoother. Size-wise, the 2020 Legacy is almost identical to the old car. Overall length has grown by 45mm (1.8 inches) to 4,840mm (190.6-in), but all other dimensions, including the wheelbase remain the same. See below for the full list of dimensions.

While the overall design of the interior isn't radically different, but the material choices and colour combinations look to big step up from the fifth-generation car.

A large portrait-orientation 11.6-inch touchscreen dominates the dashboard on many models. It displays and controls both the infotainment and air conditioning systems. Thankfully there are still physical buttons and dials for temperature and volume. Lower-spec models have two 7-inch touchscreens, which do a similar thing.

Despite the fancy, and eye-catching touchscreen, the Legacy isn't offered with a fully digital instrumentation display.

Based on the new Subaru Global Platform, as used already by the Ascent and Impreza, the new Legacy is said to be a lot stiffer (up to 70% and 100% on some measures) than the outgoing car. Safety is also improved by a new driver monitoring system, which can detect driver inattention and drowsiness.

You better hurry if you like the current car's 3.6L H6, which has 191kW (256hp) and 335Nm (247 lb-ft). The new car replaces that engine with a turbocharged 2.4L H4 with 194kW (260hp) and 277 lb-ft (376Nm). The standard engine is 2.5L H4 with 136kW (182hp) and 239Nm (176 lb-ft).

In the US, all-wheel drive and a Lineartronic CVT are standard regardless of the engine.
