2018 Toyota Corolla Sport: Wide body hatch returns to Japan with turbo, AWD

The 2018 Toyota Corolla Sport replaces the Auris in Japan, and is the first wide body Corolla to be sold in the home market under the iconic name.


Based on the third generation Auris sold in Europe, and 12th generation Corolla hatch for America, the new JDM Toyota Corolla Sport has two engine options.

The Hybrid G has a 90kW (121hp) hybrid powertrain with a nickel metal hydrid battery. Its 1.8L 2ZR-FXE 4-cylinder makes 72kW (97hp) and 142Nm (105 lb-ft), and the electric motor makes 53kW (71hp) and 163Nm (120 lb-ft).

The FWD only Hybrid G starts at ¥2,689,200 (US$24,300).

The G has the 8NR-FTS 1.2L turbo I4 with 85kW (114hp) and 185Nm (136 lb-ft). A CVT with 10 speeds, and FWD is standard. AWD is optional, and a manual transmission is available from August 2018.

Prices start at ¥2,419,200 (US$21,900) for the FWD, and ¥2,613,600 (US$23,600) for the AWD.

Standard on all models is Toyota Safety Sense (pre-collision safety, radar cruise control, automatic highbeam, road sign assist, lane tracing assist), the TNGA platform, and DCM connected car service.

The monthly sales target in Japan is 2,300.
