While the ninth-generation Accord was classy and elegant, the new 10th generation model has gone for a sportier look. The facelifted ninth-generation model prepared us for the new car's chrome moustache, but the single-frame-style grille is new.

The sportier look comes from more steeply angled front and rear windscreens, creating an almost fastback-like rear. The arched chrome accent over the side windows is clearly drawn from the latest Civic sedan.

US mid-size sedan buyers are a conservative lot, but they've been migrating to more spacious SUVs for a while now. The Accord attempts to keep its traditional buyers, but also woo new ones into the fold. Although the rear fastback-like, it's still very much a booted sedan.

The ninth-generation Accord's dash was definitely a cut above the Camry's, the new model tries to do the same again. The new dashboard is a lot cleaner in its design, and has a single 8-inch tablet-style touchscreen instead of the two screen setup of the previous model.

The new C-shaped tail-lights might be sportier looking, but we'll miss the LED ribs from the facelifted ninth-generation Accord.

Despite looking bigger, having a longer wheelbase (by 2.16 inches or 55mm), and boasting a more spacious interior, the new 10th generation Accord is actually 0.39 inches or 10mm shorter overall. The roof is also 0.59 inches or 15mm lower, while the body is 0.39 inches or 10mm wider.

The new Accord has high-strength steel and other lightweight materials, meaning it is between 50 and 80kg (110 and 176lb) lighter than the ninth-generation model.

In the US, the new Accord is only available with 4-cylinder petrol engines. The standard engine is a 1.5-litre turbo with 143kW (192hp)and 260Nm (192 lb-ft), and it replaces the old model's 2.4-litre mill. The sportier engine is a 2-litre turbo , detuned from the Civic Type R, and making 188kW (252hp) and 370Nm (273 lb-ft). The 2-litre turbo replaces the 3.5-litre V6. A naturally aspirated 2-litre is available with the company's two-motor hybrid system.

The coupe has been axed for the 10th generation Accord range. Honda is hoping the sportier shape of the sedan will keep previous coupe customers in its orbit.
