2016 Volkswagen Golf R400: Cancelled due to dieselgate cutbacks

The high power 400hp (298kW) Volkswagen Golf R400 super hot hatch has been cancelled due to the company’s dieselgate woes and worsening financial state.

The Volkswagen Golf R400 concept (above) made its debut at the 2014 Beijing Auto Show, and the production version was due to arrive either later this year or early next year.

According to Automotive News, the Golf R400 has now been cancelled. Belt tightening caused by the ever rising costs of the dieselgate scandal, and departure of the car’s champion, former R&D chief Heinz Jakob Neusser are the reasons for its demise.

Audi is continuing to develop the 400hp (298kW) version of the 2-liter turbocharged EA888 engine, but will end up using it for its own products instead.
