ToyotaCorolla

Toyota Corolla etymology: What does its name mean?

The Toyota Corolla is one of the world’s most popular cars, what have you ever wondered what its name means? If so, read on to find out.

If you’ve been reading these pages, then you’ll know that Toyota has a certain affinity with crowns, and it should, then, be no surprise to learn that the Corolla — a cornerstone of Toyota’s lineup — sticks with that theme.

The corolla is the second outermost whorl of petals on a flower. This crowning area protects the plant’s sexual organs.

Corolla comes from the Latin word of the same spelling, which means small garland, chaplet or wreath. A corolla is a small version of corona, which is a garland, chaplet, wreath or crown.

Appropriate, really, because for 30 or so years, the Corolla sat underneath the larger, more expensive Corona in Toyota’s model range.
