Lexus

Which Lexus is most popular in Europe after 30 years and 1 million sales?

Lexus was launched in Europe in 1990 with just one model, the LS, and while it redefined the luxury saloon its sales were modest.

Just 1,158 were sold in the first year, but the LS was a big hit in the US where it was better made, better supported and much cheaper than rivals from German brands, like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Following on, Lexus Europe launched in the GS in 1993, IS in 1999, RX in 2000, SC in 2001, LX in 2002, ES in 2010, GX in 2010, CT in 2011, LFA in 2011, NX in 2014, RC in 2015, LC in 2017, and UX in 2019.

As of September 30, 2020 Lexus has sold 1,006,710 cars in Europe (that’s the EU, UK, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, the Caucasus region, Turkey and Israel). Here’s the breakdown of overall sales by model line:

  • RX: 289,284
  • IS: 202,210
  • NX: 155,366
  • CT: 97,637
  • GS: 74,998
  • LX: 58,234
  • LS: 39,059
  • UX: 32,972
  • ES: 26,949
  • GX: 14,862
  • RC: 7,083
  • SC: 6,202
  • LC: 1,816
  • LFA: 38

At least 45% of all Lexus models sold in Europe were hybrids, and right now hybrids account for 96% of all Lexus sales in western Europe.
