VW stops US production of Passat TDI thanks to dieselgate

Rather unsurprisingly, because the EPA has banned sales of cars with the EA189, Volkswagen has decided to nix production of the Passat TDI in Tennessee.

“As we are in the middle of the ramp up of the production volume, it is no problem to adjust the mix to accommodate this change,” Scott Wilson, a Volkswagen spokesperson, told Automotive News.

The updated and facelifted US Passat range is heading into production. After being unveiled in October, the car will go on sale by December 2015.

The Passat is one of a number of models fitted with the 2-liter EA189 diesel engine that has illegal software to pass emissions testing.
