Volkswagen to stop diesel sales in the USA due to dieselgate

Volkswagen won’t bring back diesel engines to the US market due to dieselgate. Instead the company will focus on SUVs and EVs.

Herbert Diess, boss of the Volkswagen brand, told Handelsblatt that “at the moment we assume that we will offer no new diesel vehicles in the U.S.”

Earlier the company had suggested that it might return diesel engined cars to the USA after the memory of dieselgate began to fade away. At one point diesel cars accounted for 25 percent of all Volkswagen cars sold in the USA.

Instead Volkswagen will now focus on bringing more SUVs and EVs to market. Volkswagen has largely missed out on the SUV boom with just the Tiguan and luxury Touareg on sale.

It will begin fixing this with the new Atlas SUV.
