Volkswagen Phideon etymology: What does its name mean?

The Volkswagen Phideon is the brand’s first MLB-based car, and its new made-in-China range-topper, but what does its name mean?

According to Volkswagen, Phideon is a made up word “standing for elegance and reliability”. It’s said to be derived both phonetically and symbolically from Fides, the Roman goddess of trust.

Her name gives rides to the term bona fides (good faith), which remains in use to this day. Her template was located in the Roman capitol, and she is said to have kept an eye on the treaties that Rome signed with its neighbours.
