Toyota 86 GRMN: More powerful coupe limited to 100 units

Toyota is finally giving fans the 86/GT86/Scion FR-S coupe they’ve always wanted: one with more power. But there’s just one small catch.

The company and its Gazoo Racing offshoot will only be making 100 Toyota 86 GRMN models. Japanese buyers can enter an online lottery between January 4 and 22 to purchase one of the 86 GRMN models for ¥6.48 million (US$53,800).

With low friction engine components, new intake and exhaust systems, power from the 2-liter horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine has been boosted to 161kW (216hp) and 217Nm (160 lb-ft). The only transmission offered is a tweaked 6-speed manual.

Weight has been reduced with CFRP (carbonfibre reinforced plastic) for the hood, trunk and roof panels, polycarbonate resin rear window, and removed rear seats.

There’s also unique suspension, new tires, better brakes, a large rear wing, and an aero package.

The Toyota 86 GRMN will be displayed at the 2016 Tokyo Auto Salon.
