Suzuki Jimny could be axed in Europe due to CO2 rules

New corporate average CO2 emissions rules due to come into play in 2021 could see the Suzuki Jimny withdrawn from sale in the EU.

According to Autocar India, Suzuki has already instructed dealers to stop taking new orders for the Jimny immediately.

The Jimny, which was redesigned last year, has been a success with the Suzuki UK quickly selling out its allocation of 1,200 cars for 2019.

The new Jimny has a 1.5L I4 gas engine in Europe and has a CO2 emissions rating of 154g/km (manual) or 170g/km (automatic).

With the new EU rules, which come into force in 2021, carmakers need to have a fleet average of 95g/km. If the company sells more Jimnys, it needs to sell significantly more vehicles with lower emissions, such as its mild hybrid Ignis or Swift.

The Jimny could return to some European markets as a commercial vehicle, as they have a higher CO2 target, but these Jimnys will not have a rear seat.
