Nissan Terra body-on-frame SUV not coming to USA, not compliant

If you want a replacement for the long gone Xterra, keep dreaming. The Nissan Terra, an SUV based on the D23 Navara/Frontier pickup, isn’t coming to the US.

Masato Takahashi, the Terra’s chief designer, told Automotive News he and his team designed the car with emerging markets in mind, and ignored North American tastes.

While in theory it could slot in below the full size body on frame Armada, the Terra is only available with a 2.5L I4 or a turbo-diesel, not exactly the V6 America would expect.

The Terra is also only made in Thailand and China, and doesn’t conform with US safety standards.

Hironori Awano, chief engineer for the Terra, told The Truth About Cars, “The US market is one of the toughest, not just because of crash tests but also because of customer expectations.”
