Nissan Maxima was meant to die after A35 generation

Senior Nissan officials have gone on the record saying that, at the height of oil prices in 2012, the A35 Maxima was going to be the last of its name.

At the launch of the new A36 Maxima (above), Takeshi Yamaguchi, a Nissan North America vice president, told Automotive News that “when I look at this car, I’m proudest of the fact that it’s here at all”.

Pierre Loing, vice president for product planning, said, “A lot of people assume it was a forgone conclusion that, of course we will continue with another Maxima, but frankly, the forgone conclusion at that moment was that there would not be another Maxima”.

Given the Maxima’s high name recognition, said to be higher than that of Nissan itself, in the USA, the company decided to double down with the new A36 Maxima, increasing luxury, pricing and making its styling bolder.

Will it be a success? And will it justify an A37 follow up? Let us know below.
