Nissan IDS concept previews 2018 Leaf, has self-driving tech

At the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show Nissan has revealed the IDS concept, which is an EV hatch packed full of autonomous driving features.

Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn says that from 2020, Nissan cars will be offered with autonomous driving technology. Ghosn says, “Nissan Intelligent Driving improves a driver’s ability to see, think and react. It compensates for human error, which causes more than 90 percent of all car accidents. As a result, time spent behind the wheel is safer, cleaner, more efficient and more fun.”

The IDS concept also talks to the driver “concerning traffic conditions, the driver’s schedule to personal interests” and so on. As the IDS is able to drive itself, the interior is configurable to be more lounge like when in piloted driving mode.

The IDS’ body is made from carbon fiber and is just 1,380mm (54.3 inches) wide. The car rides of 175 width tires and has a 60kWh battery pack.

Given the car’s hatchback shape, and use of Nissan’s latest design ideas (up and down window line, V motion grille, etc), the IDS probably previews the next generation Leaf.
