Hyundai Genesis Coupe: 2-litre turbo dropped from US range for MY2015

Hyundai US has confirmed that it will drop the 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo from its Genesis Coupe range when it’s refreshed for the 2015 model year.

Late last month a report in Korean Car Blog leaked a Powerpoint slide from Hyundai USA, which detailed the company’s plan to replace the 2-litre turbo version of the coupe with a cheaper variant powered by the 3.8-litre V6.

Speaking to Automotive News Derek Joyce, a spokesman for Hyundai, confirmed that this was indeed the company’s plan. According to Joyce “going to allow us to reposition the coupe with a more premium performance buyer”.

With an all V6 range, the revised Genesis Coupe seems likely to abandon the boy racer market in favour of those who would cross-shop with pony cars, like the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro. The current 2-litre turbo model accounts for half of the coupe range’s sales.
