2022 Vauxhall Astra: New Peugeot platform, first plug-in hybrid option

The 2022 Vauxhall and Opel Astra is now based on the same platform as the Peugeot 308 instead of using a GM architecture.

The Astra’s sharp new body has the Opel/Vauxhall’s visor design, and a sharper interior with two large screens in a wraparound block.

With the EMP2 architecture (shared with the Peugeot 308 and others), the Astra is available for the first time with a PHEV powertrain. Two, in fact.

Both have a 1.6L turbo I4 with a 81kW electric motor built into the 8-speed auto, and a 12.4kWh lithium-ion battery good for 50km (31mi) of EV driving and a 7.4kW charger. The base model has a total power output of 110kW (148hp), and the upscale model has 134kW (178hp).

There are two non-PHEV engines: a 1.2L turbo I3 with either 81kW (108hp) or 95kW (128hp), and a 4-cylinder turbo-diesel with 95kW (128hp). All these engines have a 6-speed manual standard, and an optional 8-speed auto.
