2022 Ford F-150 Lightning vs F-150 V6/V8: Difference & changes

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning has more power and torque the 3.5L twin-turbo V6 F-150, but what other changes are there?

The F-150 Lightning is still very clearly based on the F-150 with V6 and V8 engines, but there are some design differences. The standard range Lightning has 426hp (318kW) and a range of 230mi (370km). The extended range Lightning has 563hp (420kW), and a range of 300mi (482km). Both versions have 775 lb-ft (1,050Nm). That's a lot more than the 400hp (298kW) and 500 lb-ft (678Nm) from the non-Raptor 3.5L twin-turbo V6.

The Lightning doesn't need a big grille to cool an engine, but Ford decided to keep a big slab of plastic between the lights with lots of grille styling on it. The headlight units are narrower, there's a lightbar that goes full width, and the front bumper design is cleaner, but the it's not that much more aerodynamic than a regular F-150.

Without a big V6 or V8 up front, Ford has converted the engine bay into a huge front trunk or 'frunk' that has 14.1 cu-ft (400L) of storage. The huge covered storage area could be the Lightning's game changing feature.

The Lightning as thinner side boards to improve aero. Only one body configuration is available: a 4 door SuperCrew with a 5.5ft (1.7m) bed. Ford says the storage space of frunk makes a longer bed unnecessary. The frunk can supply 2.4kW to 120V and USB power outlets in the front.

There's a new tailgate design, taillights, and rear fenders for the F-150 Lightning. Again there's a full width light bar. 7.2kW is available to the power outlets in the rear bed. The standard range Lightning has a tow rating of 2,000lb (907kg) and tow rating of 7,700lb (3,493kg), and the extended range model has a load rating of 1,800lb (816kg) and a tow rating of 10,000lb (4,536kg) with the maximum tow package.
