2021 Ford S-Max Hybrid, Galaxy Hybrid: Dying MPVs go out green

The Ford S-Max and Galaxy minivans won’t be renewed for a new generation, but they are going out with a new greener full hybrid powertrain.

The new S-Max Hybrid and Galaxy Hybrid models take a large part of their new drivetrain option from the Kuga/Escape Hybrid.

Under the hood there’s a 2.5L Atkinson cycle I4 with an electric motor, powersplit (CVT) transmission, and a 1.1kWh lithium-ion battery. Total output is 140kW (187hp).

Acceleration isn’t fast: 0-100km/h in the S-Max needs 9.8s, and a full 10s in the more spacious Galaxy. But it does return 6.4L/100km (36.7mpg) in WLTP testing, and should be better for the environment than the EcoDiesel models.
