2020 Subaru Outback vs 2018-2019 facelift: Differences compared

The 2020 Subaru Outback doesn’t look too different from the 2018 facelift, but it’s a new model. See all the changes in this side by side comparison.

Stylistically the sixth-generation Outback (based on the seventh-generation Legacy) is not very different from the outgoing model, but it actually rides on all new platform.

Let's call the design evolutionary. We don't have dimensions for the new Outback, but the latest Legacy has the same wheelbase as the outgoing sedan, but is 45mm (1.7-in) longer overall.

The new Outback is available with a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre H4 with 136kW (182hp) and 239Nm (176 lb-ft), or a 2.4-litre turbocharged H4 with 194kW (260hp) and 277 lb-ft (376Nm). The latter engine replaces the previous car's 3.6-litre H6, which made 191kW (256hp) and 335Nm (247 lb-ft).

2018-19
The sixth-generation Outback, like the seventh-generation Legacy, has smoother and softer detailing than the previous model. At the front there's more 'tough' grey plastic, a more organic headlight shape, and more bonnet creases.

At the rear there's new crab claw tail-lights and sliver highlights for the grey plastic lower bumper. AWD and CVT are standard on all models.

The grey plastic lower door and sill protectors have a more dynamic shape now. The surfacing along the sides is softer, the shoulder line has largely disappeared, and the wheel arches have gained a bit of plastic protection.

Again, the design of the interior isn't hugely different to the previous model, but there's been a big upgrade in terms of materials. The dashboard now has softer surfaces and a large expanse of (probably faux) leather.

The new Outback still has analog instruments, but the top-end infotainment system is now a huge 11.6-inch touchscreen for the infotainment and climate control systems, with some physical buttons retained for temperature and volume. Lower-spec models have two 7-inch touchscreens.

The new Outback is said to have a wider tailgate opening, and is available with a hands-free tailgate for the first time. With the rear seats down, the cargo floor length is 1.98m (78-in) and the loading volume is 2,144L (75.7 cu-ft).
