2020 Fiat 500 & Panda gain 1L I3 with mild hybrid system

The 2020 Fiat 500 and Panda now have a 1L I3 mild hybrid powertrain to replace the old 1.2L engine option, and improve fuel economy.

The Mild Hybrid system has a 1L FireFly I3 engine with 52kW (70hp) at 6,000rpm and 92Nm (68 lb-ft) at 3,500rpm, and a new integrated belt starter motor with an 11Ah lithium-ion battery for automatic engine stop/start and acceleration assist.

The only transmission is a 6-speed manual, and when it’s shifted into neutral at speeds below 29km/h (18mph), the engine shuts itself off.

In the Fiat 500 Mild Hybrid top speed is 167km/h (104mph), 0-100km/h takes 13.8s, and WLTP fuel economy is 5.3L/100km (53.3mpg).

For the taller Panda Mild Hybrid top speed is reduced to 155km/h (96mph), 0-100km/h needs 14.7s, and WLTP fuel economy is worse at 5.7L/100km (49.6mpg).

There’s a special Launch Edition model with Seaqual Yarn fabric made from 90% recycled plastic.

The new mild hybrid powertrain is available in the 500 and Panda from Q1 2020.
