2018 Honda Civic Type R: Automatic would be too heavy for FWD hot hatch

The 2018 Honda Civic Type R is only being offered with a 6-speed manual because an automatic or DCT would be make the front axle too heavy.

Yuji Matsumochi, Honda powertrain project leader, told Motoring, “If we tried to have an automatic transmission or DCT for over 400Nm, then the powertrain would be very heavy weight, which would mean additional front weight, and upset the weight balance.”

The new Honda Civic Type R has a 2-liter turbo 4-cylinder with 235kW (316hp) and 400Nm (295 lb-ft) with a 6-speed manual and FWD only.
