GMC

GMC etymology: What does its name? What do its letters stand for?

GMC trucks and SUVs are sold in North America and the Middle East, often in dealerships shared with Buick, but what do the brand’s letters stand for?

GMC stands for General Motor Corporation or General Motors Company. The first known use of the GMC brand was in 1912 when the company began promoting vehicles under the GMC Truck banner. GMC Truck was finally, officially, shortened to just GMC in 1998.

In the early years of the company, GMC was the acronym preferred by employees to refer to the corporation. When GMC was more formally entrenched as a brand in its own right, GM became the preferred acronym.
