F45/F46 BMW 2-Series FWD Tourers not coming to the US

The front-wheel drive F45 BMW 2-Series Active Tourer and F46 2-Series Gran Tourer will not be coming to the USA or, most likely, Canada.

A BMW spokesperson told Automotive News that neither the 5-seat F45 2-Series Active Tourer or the 3-row 7-seat F46 2-Series Gran Tourer (pictured above) are large enough to be sold in the USA.

The role of the largest high-riding BMW model will remain with the RWD and AWD E81 X1 crossover. This model will be replaced soon with FWD and AWD model, which will share its underpinnings with the Mini range, as well as the F45 and F46 2-Series models.

Given that the current X1 sits between the F45 and F46 in overall length, it’s likely that a more important consideration in BMW’s thinking is that small people movers just aren’t popular here in the USA.

With the Mazda 5 unlikely to be replaced, the Kia Rondo already out to pasture and the Canada-only Chevrolet Orlando discontinued, it’s probably a wise choice.
