Aston Martin Valkyrie: What does its name mean? Who is it named after?

The Aston Martin Red Bull AM-RB001 hypercar has been given a real name, Valkyrie, but what does it mean and where does it come from?

A Valkyrie are female figures in Norse mythology whose task it was to choose who lived or died during a battle. In addition to this, they transported half of the fallen to Valhalla to live with Odin, the god of the death, fighting, knowledge and healing, amongst other things.

The other half of the dead would go to Fólkvangr to live with Freyja, the goddess of love, sex, beauty, fertility, war and death, amongst others.

In Old Norse, Valkyrie meant “chooser of the slain”.
