2018 Volvo XC60 vs 2014-2017: 2nd vs 1st generation differences

The second-gen Volvo XC60 has been launched nine years after the original. See the changes between the two cars in this side-by-side photo comparison.

2nd gen
1st gen F/L
The second-generation XC60 uses the SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) that also underpins the larger XC90, rather the Ford Mondeo-based platform of the first-generation model.
2nd gen
1st gen F/L
Despite the new underpinnings, Volvo has made a concerted attempt to give the two cars a strong visual link. This is most evident in their side profile.

1st gen F/L
Again, the slope of the tailgate and the shape of the tail-lights draws a link between the long-lived first-generation car and the new Geely-funded model.
2nd gen
1st gen F/L
The new XC60 has a dash that's a very similar, but not the same as the one in the second-gen XC90. Volvo has ditched the technical look to something inspired by modern Swedish furniture design.

The second-gen XC60's interior is definitely a huge step up in terms of luxury, with quality fittings, soft touch materials, leather everywhere, and modern trim. We are sad that the storage nook behind the HVAC system is now gone.

The original XC60 had a small centre screen with the disliked Sensus infotainment system, the new car borrows the large, high resolution, portrait touchscreen system from the larger XC90.
2nd gen
1st gen F/L
We've always loved Volvo's seat, but the new XC60 looks even better than before.

Gone are the original XC60's selection of four-, five- and six-cylinder inline engines — some of which were shared with Ford. In their place, there's a new 2-litre four-cylinder petrol motor with, depending on the model, turbocharging, supercharging and/or a plug-in hybrid. There's also a related 2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine in various states of tune.

Both the original and new XC60 seat five people in a 2+3 layout. It will once again be Volvo's top selling model across the world.
