Chevrolet

Chevrolet was founded in late 1911 by Swiss-American race car driver Louis Chevrolet and the deposed boss of General Motors, William Durant. Within seven years, Durant would take control of GM via a reverse merger with Chevy.

Durant’s successor at GM designated Chevrolet as its mainstream brand after declaring that the company would make a “a car for every purse and purpose”.

Today Chevrolet is GM’s volume brand in the Americas, many parts of Asia and Russia. In 2005 the marque made a big push into Europe by taking over Daewoo’s presence there. GM hoped to shift Opel/Vauxhall upmarket, but thanks to various factors, including bankruptcy, economic recession and too little separation between the brands, the move foundered and Chevrolet will quit the continent by 2016.
