Volkswagen Jetta Turbo Hybrid dumped from US lineup

The Volkswagen Jetta Turbo Hybrid will not be renewed for the 2017 model year, with low sales and a quite astronomical price the key reasons for its demise.

Volkswagen has confirmed that the Jetta Turbo Hybrid will not be back for the 2017 model year. Priced at US$31,390 the Turbo Hybrid was available only in the top of the line SEL Premium trim.

This made it one of the most expensive models in the US Jetta lineup, which starts at just US$18,500. Consequently the Jetta Turbo Hybrid only made up 1 percent of all Jetta sales in the US last year.

The axing of the Jetta Turbo Hybrid comes as Volkswagen seeks to streamline its range of vehicles and variants ahead of a huge push into, uhh, plug-in hybrids and electric cars in the wake of the dieselgate scandal.

The Jetta Turbo Hybrid had an interesting drivetrain pairing 1.4-liter turbo I4 gas engine, with an electric motor and 7-speed DSG for a total of 150hp (112kW) and 184 lb-ft (249Nm).

Surely a lower priced model would have fared slightly better against the Prius and other hybrids, although, then again, SUVs and trucks rule in the US due to low gas prices.
