UAW members defy union to elect Donald Trump as president

Donald Trump, reality TV star and business tycoon, has won a surprise election victory, and he did so by winning a majority of union votes.

According to exit polls in Ohio, Trump won a majority of votes from union members. The midwest and the rust belt have been hit particularly hard the flight of manufacturing jobs overseas and increasing automation in factories.

The UAW (United Auto Workers) union has been criticized for endorsing Hillary Clinton early into the primary cycle when she was still battling Bernie Sanders.

Trump won Ohio and its 18 electoral college votes by a margin of 52.1% to Clinton’s 43.5%.
