Tesla Model S to be evaluated by LAPD for police patrol duty

The LAPD recently added 100 BMW i3 electric hatchbacks, and will now test the Tesla Model S to see if it’s suitable as a patrol car.

The deployment of the BMW i3 hatches has gone well, Vartan Yegiyan told NBC4 Los Angeles. With range of just 81mi (130km) and a 0 to 100km/h (0 to 62mph) time of around 8 seconds, the i3 fleet is being used for non-emergency duty.

The LAPD has two Tesla Model S sedans on loan. One is painted in the LAPD’s signature black and white livery, but is restricted to community events and the like as it isn’t kitted out for police work.

Tesla and the LAPD are negotiating to have the second all-black car kitted out to police spec.

Ignoring the Tesla Model S’ high price compared to the Chevrolet Caprice, Ford Taurus, and Dodge Charger police cars, the Model S should do well in pursuits with a 0 to 60mph time of 2.5 seconds.
