MY2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI starts at US$24k; more power coming later

The Mark VII Volkswagen Golf GTI has finally arrived in the USA, but those wanting the Performance Package will have to wait just that little bit longer.

Under the hood is EA888 2-litre turbocharged engine kicking out 210hp (157kW) and 258 lb-ft (350Nm). Later in the year an optional Performance Package will liberate an extra 10hp (7kW) and add a torque-sensing electronically-controlled limited-slip differential (LSD), as well as larger brakes, into the mix.

The three-tier MY2015 Mark VII Volkswagen GTI range kicks off with the GTI S at US$24,395 for the two-door model and US$24,995 for the four-door. Standard fittings include 18-inch alloy wheels; leather steering wheel, handbrake and gear shifter; LED interior ambient lighting; chequered cloth seats; LED foglights; and heated front seats. The touchscreen audio system features Bluetooth, Sirius XM satellite radio compatibility and iPod connectivity.

Next up is the GTI SE that retails for US$27,395 as a two-door and US$27,995 for the four-door. Added kit includes power sunroof; push button start; proximity entry key; reversing camera; auto headlights; rain-sensing wipers; leather seats; and a Fender sound system.

The four-door only GTI Autobahn caps off the range at US$29,595. At this level sat nav, 12-way powered seats, and climate control are standard.

Extra cost equipment includes bi-xenon headlights, headlights that turn in concert with steering input, forward collision warning, front and rear parking sensors, and adaptive damping.

All models come fitted with a 6-speed manual as standard, with a 7-speed speed dual-clutch (DSG) transmission as a US$1,100 option.
