Mercedes-Benz R-Class: AM General to produce China-only model

Production of the Mercedes-Benz R-Class will shift from the company’s Tuscaloosa plant to an AM General factory on a contract basis.

This frees room at the Mercedes-Benz plant for increased production capacity for the core M-Class and GL-Class models, as well as the recently unveiled GLE Coupe.

The R-Class ceased sales in the US and other markets in 2013, but the car is still on sale in China where it’s marketed in long-wheelbase form in both 6 and 7 seat models.

This is the first time that Mercedes-Benz has contracted out production to an American firm. AM General most famously produces Humvee military vehicles for the US government.
