Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat promises over 600hp of supercharged V8 fun

The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat will be Dodge’s first supercharged V8 engine and the most powerful V8 in the Chrysler Group’s history.

Under the Challenger Hellcat’s vented hood sits a 6.2-litre Hemi V8 being force fed by a supercharger and generated at least 600hp (447kW); no word yet on how much torque this motor produces. Dodge boasts that the Hellcat’s forged-steel crankshaft has induction-hardened bearing surfaces that withstand firing pressures of 110bar (1,595psi).

Buyers will be able to choose between a 6-speed manual and — close your eyes enthusiasts — a new TorqueFlite-branded 8-speed auto. The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat rides on 20-inch alloy wheels, while up front there are 390mm Brembo 2-piece rotors and 6-piston calipers.

Standard on the Hellcat are two key fobs. One comes in black is restricts the engine’s output, while the other is red and allows the driver to enjoy the Challenger SRT Hellcat in its full glory. There’s also a valet mode, selectable from within the car, which restricts the engine to 4,000rpm, upshifts the transmission early, locks out first gear and manual gear selection, and nixes launch control.
