Citroen DS 6WR: FWD SUV targets China, loses Wild Rubis’ flamboyance

Ahead of its public unveiling at the Beijing Auto Show, Citroen has released images and details of its upcoming DS 6WR SUV that’s targeted at the Chinese middle class.

The new DS 6WR is said to be the production version of the earlier DS Wild Rubis concept car.

According to Citroen, the DS 6WR will only be offered in front-wheel drive, with the company’s Grip Control traction system used in place of all-wheel drive. At launch the DS 6WR will be available with a 6-speed auto mated to 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine generating either 120kW/240Nm (161hp/177 lb-ft) or 147kW/275Nm (197hp/203 lb-ft).

Top spec DS 6WR models will come equipped with plenty of chrome embellishments and xenon headlights. Little else is known about the DS 6WR’s specifications (expect more when the Beijing show kicks off on 20 April).

Beginning in China, and set to expand throughout the world, the DS range will be independently branded and marketed as upscale companion to the more plebeian Citroen range. The DS 6WR joins the DS 5LS (luxury sedan, we presume) in the growing independent DS range. What will become of the Citroen DS3, DS4 and DS5 hatchbacks isn’t quite as certain.
