2016 Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S: Limited to 400 strippers

Debuting at the 2016 Lake Worthersee meeting, just 400 of the more powerful, stripped out 3-door, 2-seat Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S will be built.

Under the hood there’s a more powerful version of the 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine from the regular GTI series. The motor now produces 228kW (306hp) and 380Nm (280 lb-ft). Drive is sent to the front wheels via a 6-speed manual.

With an EU unladen weight reduced to 1,360kg (or DIN rated weight of 1,285kg), the Golf GTI Clubsport S can do the 0-100km/h in 5.8 seconds and hit an unrestricted top speed of 265km/h (165mph).

Just 400 Golf GTI Clubsport S models will be built. 100 are allocated to Germany, but zero will be coming to the USA and Canada. All models have 3-door hatch body, with weight savings coming from the removal of the rear seats, insulation material, variable luggage trunk floor, rear parcel shelf, floor mats, bonnet damping, and a smaller battery.

There’s also an aluminum front axle subframe and aluminum brake covers.

The Golf GTI Clubsport S rides on 19-inch Pretoria alloys with a 235/35 Michelin tires. Changes include a strut tower brace, new roof edge spoiler, refined aerodynamics and styling, and a partition net behind the front seats.
